Jeff Merrill

Originally from Idaho Falls, Idaho, Jeff Merrill worked as an illustrator for more than a decade before turning to fine art. In 2011, he earned an M.FA. in figure painting from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, and now resides in Laié, Hawaii with his wife and three children where he is a Professor of drawing and painting at BYU-Hawaii. His work has been recognized nationally for years. In 2008, he received the Thanhardt-Burger Award of Excellence in the OPA National Juried Exhibition. Since then, his work has regularly been accepted to this and other OPA shows. Twice he was awarded First Place for his paintings “La Enfermera”, and Warmth on the Bay”, in 2011 and 2013 respectively, as part of the OPA Fall Online Showcase. Other Awards include First Place (figurative) and Third place (still life), at the Academy of Art University’s Spring Salon, in 2011. In 2013, he was named an ‘artist to watch’ by Bonnie Gangelhoff, editor of Southwest Art Magazine. He is also a signature member of PAPOH (Plein Air Painters of Hawaii). Of his process he says: “Creating an aesthetic harmony in each work is at the heart of my painting pursuit. Although, I paint a range of subjects, (landscape, still life, and figure) my passion lies firmly in expressing the emotion and beauty of the human form. Each work is a reconciliation of opposites, between the abstract elements of shapes and paint quality, together with the necessary visual information that suggest light, form, and depth. Seeing painting through this lens of design elements enables me to juxtapose contrasting visual ideas to arrive at a unified whole.”
